What is a wireless network?

FAQ’s, tips and insights > Managed IT Services

A wireless network is a type of computer network that allows devices to connect and communicate without using traditional Ethernet cables like CAT5 or CAT6. Instead, it uses Wi-Fi radio signals to transmit data between computers, smartphones, printers, and network gateways.

Wireless networks are commonly used in homes and offices to provide internet access and enable file sharing, printing, and device connectivity without the need for physical cabling. In typical office environments, wireless networks can have a range of approximately 100 to 300 metres, though this can vary depending on walls, interference, and building layout.

It’s important to note that a wireless network is different from a mobile data network (such as 4G or 5G). While both offer wireless connectivity, a Wi-Fi network relies on local infrastructure like access points and routers, whereas mobile networks are delivered by telecom carriers over wide areas.
